AAA workers fired over MySpace messages
8 August 2005
The Automobile Club of Southern California has reportedly sacked 27 workers over messages posted on the MySpace social networking site.
A spokeswoman for the firm said that the employees at its San Diego office were fired after at least one worker complained to managers that they had felt harassed by the comments.
The employees wrote the comments outside the workplace, but the spokeswoman said they referred to other employees' weight and sexual orientation and the dismissed workers had also discussed online ways of slowing down roadside assistance work.
The AP news agency quotes spokeswoman Carol Thorp as saying: "When a worker complains about harassment, you take it seriously."
A growing number of office workers have been fired over material they have placed on the internet, with blogs, or personal web blogs, often leading to an employee's sacking.
