Poll shows America not yet switched on to blogs

Just six per cent of people in North America claim to read blogs, a new survey has found.

The poll by Forrester Research also discovered that only two per cent of respondents reported using RSS.

However, the survey of 68,664 people also revealed that many people who say they are not yet reading blogs or using RSS services are doing so without realising the name of the technology they are viewing or using.

The data also showed that broadband internet users are watching two fewer hours of television per week than those without internet access, while those using a dial-up connection watch 1.5 fewer hours. The average American without net access watches 14 hours of television on average each week.

The survey, The State of Consumers and Technology: Benchmark 2005, indicates that technology optimists, who believe technology will make life more enjoyable, outnumber pessimists, who are indifferent or even hostile to technology, 51 per cent to 49 per cent. Tech optimists are three times more likely to use streaming media and peer-to-peer file sharing and read blogs than pessimists.

Forrester predicts that the number of broadband households in the US will reach 71.4 million by 2010, up from 31 million at the end of last year.
