NTL increases broadband speed for all
8 August 2005
Cable TV provider NTL has announced that it is now offering 10Mbps as standard for all its broadband customers at no additional cost.
The firm revealed that subscribers to its 3Mbps service will be the first to be upgraded and those upgrades will be finished by the end of the year, with the rest of the upgrades taking place in 2006. NTL said customers will be able to choose from a variety of usage allowances, including unlimited usage.
In a statement, NTL, Simon Duffy, chief executive of NTL, said: " Moving 1.5 million customers to a connection of up to 10Mb is a major initiative."
The company has yet to announce prices for the new service, but claims that higher speeds of between 30Mbps and 50Mbps are ultimately possible through its cable network, or through ADSL2+ DSL broadband connections.
Services that will become available with higher internet speeds include high-definition television, 1,000 channel global radio, domestic video conferencing, global gaming, low-cost telephony and video email, according to NTL.
NTL has over 1.4 million broadband customers in the UK and its network covers 7.9 million homes. Jupiter Research predicts that 80 per cent of UK households will have a broadband connection by 2010.
