Ask Jeeves launches own ad network

2 August 2005

Ask Jeeves has unveiled its own search engine advertising network.

The sponsored link network is expected to be a very real competitor to search giant Google and Yahoo! The new service, Sponsored Listings, will generate more revenue for Ask Jeeves and enables it to gain some independence from its primary ad supplier, Google.

Search engine marketers are increasingly seeking sponsored links to promote their businesses and the decision to switch to sponsored links will enable Ask Jeeves to generate more of its own money. Ask Jeeves also plans to offer its ads to other websites and its sister sites at IAC/InterActiveCorp, including Citysearch online city guides and Ticketmaster.

However, Ask.com is still determined to maintain its link with Google and currently plans to display a handful of text ads above those supplied by Google. About two-thirds of Ask Jeeves' revenue comes from its partnership with Google.

"The demand that we've been seeing from our existing advertisers has been overwhelming," said James Speer, vice president of interactive marketing for Ask Jeeves' parent company, IAC/InterActiveCorp. "People in the industry are looking for another alternative."

Pay-per-click ads are placed on certain keyword queries and firms pay when net users click on their adverts. The system enables marketers to target a specific audience.
