Search traffic up five per cent in second quarter
29 July 2005
The number of internet searches conducted in the second quarter of 2005 rose five per cent on the first quarter of the year to 12.8 billion, new research claims.
Nielsen/NetRatings reports that more searches were conducted during the three months to June 30th on Google than on Yahoo!, MSN, America Online, and Ask Jeeves combined. Google captured 47 per cent of all search traffic during June, while Yahoo! had a 22 per cent share, MSN 12 per cent and AOL five per cent.
The research firm estimates that 6.09 billion searches were performed on Google in the second three months of the year, up six per cent on the previous quarter. Yahoo! saw its search total rise nine per cent to around 2.8 billion, while MSN's search traffic dropped by four per cent to around 1.59 billion.
AOL saw 647 million searches conducted during the second quarter, a 15 per cent increase, while search requests were up 16 per cent for Ask Jeeves to around 251 million.
"While growth in searches was modest among the ‘Big Three’ search engines, the fourth and fifth biggest search engines, AOL and Ask Jeeves, grew three times as fast," said Ken Cassar, director of strategic analysis, Nielsen/NetRatings. "While it’s far too early to say that Google needs to watch its back, a resurgent AOL makes the game a lot more interesting."
According to the Nielsen/NetRatings figures, My Way Search, a meta-search engine owned by Ask Jeeves, entered the top five most popular search engines list for the first time in June, accounting for two per cent of all internet searches.
