Yahoo offers SMS searches
11 July 2005
Internet portal Yahoo has expanded its search engine service to allow mobile phone users to receive query results in the form of text messages.
Following the lead of rival Google, the new Yahoo short message service (SMS) search will allow users to search a range of information services using 'shortcut' terms and a parameter such as a postcode, address or ticker symbol.
Available shortcuts will lead to popular search results including local information, a Wi-Fi hotspot finder, daily horoscopes and dictionary definitions.
"Shortcuts on mobile devices let consumers get the information they need, from finding the latest weather forecast, to updated stock quotes, to tracking down a good place to have lunch from wherever they are," Doug Garland, senior vice president, Yahoo! Mobile said.
The service, which has just been launched in the US, will not be available elsewhere for the present time.
Yahoo has also announced that it has extended the coverage of its mobile searching facility. The service, previously only available to handsets that supported HTML, now extends to include WAP 2.0 (XHTML) enabled handsets.
