7 July 2005
US businesses and homes are increasingly embracing high-speed internet usage, according to new figures from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The agency says that users are becoming increasingly reliant on the web, with rapid internet access particularly high on the agenda, Dow Jones reports.
In 2004 the usage of high-speed services rose by 34 per cent to 37.9 million lines, with a 17 per cent rise in the second half of the year alone.
Digital subscriber line services also soared, up by 45 per cent of the course of the year to 13.8 million lines – with the second half of the year again showing a gathering of momentum.
Other web connections using wireless and satellite soared by 50 per cent, up to 500,000.
FCC also said fibre and broadband over powerline usage went up by 16 per cent, standing at 700,000 by the end of 2004.
