Google to fight pay-per-click lawsuit
4 July 2005
Search engine giant Google is facing legal action from a search marketing firm.
The company, which provides pay-per-click advertising on the internet, is claiming damages amounting to between $5 million and $10 million.
Click Defense says Google failed to protect against what the industry terms as "click fraud".
The lawsuit relates to the practice of clicking on web search advertisements by competitors, who have no interest in buying whatever goods or services are being promoted.
This is simply intended to cost the advertiser money, as they have to pay every time their advert is clicked on.
Click fraud can involve groups of people who manually click on paid ads or software programmes.
Google has paid compensation to advertisers that have been victims of fraud in the past.
