Yahoo! plans pop-up block
17 November 2003
Yahoo! has announced a new tool to block pop-ups from its Companion Tooolbar, a downloadable plug-in that enables people to search the internet directly from the browser.
The tool is scheduled for its official launch next week, and will allow millions of web users to customise their usage by nominating sites for which they are happy to accept pop-ups. A majority is likely to select the 'none' option.
This development follows Google's addition of similar facilities to its toolbar five months ago, and is reflective of a general industry drift against aggressive internet marketing.
Service providers Earthlink and AOL have rolled out similar tools, and this is not even the first move in their direction from Yahoo!. A pop-up blocker was included in its updated net access software in September.
