New shopping search site benefits charities

26 July 2005

A new search site with a social conscience has been created, inspired by poverty in India.

Shopping site Rectifi provides search tools similar to those of Google and Yahoo!, but has pledged to donate 90 per cent of the profit generated from sponsored links and online sales to charity. The remaining ten per cent will go towards running costs and founder Jonny Platt will not draw a wage from the site.

Mr Platt hopes that the website will help redress the imbalance between rich and poor and more than 400 shops, including eBay, Apple and Sony, have already signed up for a place in the search rankings.

A former fundraiser, Mr Platt created Rectifi.org.uk as he became increasingly frustrated about the gap between poverty in developing nations and western consumerism.

"Our aim is simple, to encourage web users to use their consumerist appetite to raise money for charity," he said. "There is no additional effort on the user's part and, with 30,000 people dying every day through abject poverty, and over half the world surviving on less than £1 a day, we all have a responsibility to make changes, no matter how small."

Rectifi offers search facilities, the ability to compare prices and tips on ethical shopping and investment.
