Spammed given a chance to take revenge

26 July 2005

Israeli technology firm Blue Security has launched a new scheme that allows web users to tell spammers how they feel about junk mail.

The company has set up a new scheme to swamp batter spam websites with thousands of complaints by filling in order forms on websites offering a range of services and products with complaints about advertising via junk mail.

"The internet four or five years ago was a friendly, peaceful experience," said Eran Reshef, chief executive and founder of Blue Security. "A bunch of spammers decided they were going to make money and to do that the were willing to ruin that experience for everyone."

The start-up, a developer of anti-spam and anti-spyware products, has launched a beta version of the scheme, which organises users to make a combined attack on spammers, paralysing the websites.

Those signing up to Blue Security's Do-Not-Intrude registry can have messages sent to up to three email addresses monitored and Blue Security will also create some fake addresses to tempt spammers into sending more messages, according to the BBC.

However, the action by Blue Security has been criticised by other anti-spam groups, who claim it is vigilantism.
