Yahoo! and Cisco join forces for anti-phishing tool
21 July 2005
Yahoo! and Cisco have announced plans to submit their email authentication specification for consideration as an industry standard.
The DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) anti-spam technology has been put forward to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for approval. DKIM combines Yahoo's DomainKeys and Cisco's Internet Identified Mail.
The DomainKeys system works by enabling companies to add a private key to the header of emails it sends out, which is then checked by the receiving email server and matched to the 'public key'.
The public key is registered at the DNS level while the private key is held on the mail server itself and should result in a reduction in spam and phishing problems for web users.
"This is a big milestone for us and the email authentication world," said Miles Libbey, an anti-spam product manager at Yahoo! Mail. "This submission to the IETF represents collaboration between a lot of players in the email authentication world."
Yahoo! and Cisco announced in June that they would combine their internet authentication technologies with the intention of licensing the resultant package royalty free.
