UK broadband overtakes dial-up
20 July 2005
The number of broadband internet connections in the UK has overtaken dial-up, new figures reveal.
Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that broadband connections reached a peak of 50.7 per cent of internet connections in May. Broadband connections have grown by nearly 80 per cent over the last year.
In 2001 broadband connections accounted for just 0.8 per cent of all connections. Dial-up connections reached their peak in February 2002 and have been in decline ever since, falling by 26 per cent in the 12 months to May 2005.
A report from watchdog Ofcom earlier this month indicated that broadband prices are falling as take-up escalates. A 512Kbps link cost around £27 per month at the end of 2002, falling to £20 for the average 1Mbps connection today.
Total connections to the internet have risen by 45 per cent since January 2001 to more than eight million, according to the ONS figures.
Jupiter Research has predicted that 80 per cent of online households in Europe will have a broadband connection by 2010.
