Google backers plough $16m into new start-up
19 July 2005
The early venture capital backers of Google have set their sights on a new company.
John Doerr of Silicon Valley's venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Ram Shriram of Sherpalo Ventures have invested $16 million in Zazzle and joined its board of directors.
Zazzle customises postage stamps, clothing and other items and has a growing presence on the web. The firm has formed a partnership with Pitney Bowes to provide personalised postage and claims to have also forged content partnerships with the Walt Disney Company, the Library of Congress and a host of artists worldwide.
The firm is in competition with venture capital-funded CafePress.com, which has a partnership deal with Stamps.com, and announced that it will use the cash to expand manufacturing operations, increase its consumer technology and grow its customer base.
Zazzle chief executive Robert Beaver said in a statement on Monday: "Their support will help us to expand our marketplace, as we drive to provide all individuals with an outlet where they can create and share products limited only by their imagination."
Zazzle enables users to select from the company's large collection of digital images and create personal products or gifts to sell through the website's online marketplace.
