Technology blackmail warning
13 November 2003
Experts have warned companies that criminals could target them through the technology they use to do business.
Commercial websites are being disabled by sophisticated extortionists, who then demand money with the threat that other attacks will follow unless payment is made.
Typical targets are businesses whose revenue is dependent on internet transactions, such as online retailers and gambling services. The criminals usually cause disruption by overloading the sites.
The British National Hi-Tech Crime Unit has confirmed that an increase in such attacks has been noted, although it would not comment on speculation that much of this kind of crime originates in Eastern Europe.
Businesses can offset the risk of being successfully targeted by regularly checking on security procedures, especially firewalls.
