Official launch of Search Marketing Association UK
30 June 2005
The Search Marketing Association UK has held its first meeting at the annual Search Engine Strategies meeting in London.
The newly-created association is open to anyone involved in search engine marketing, from organic optimisation to pay-per-click and pay-per-inclusion marketing or web analytics.
The SMA-UK intends to be self-financing and does not plan to make sponsorship deals with search engines.
The first chairman, Andy Atkins-Kruger from Web Certain Europe, told the meeting that the key objectives of the new association would be search engine and supplier liaison, research, developing content for the association's website and promotion of the group itself.
The association also hopes to develop training programmes and become a point of contact with the government and with similar groups around the world, such as the newly formed Web Analytics Association in the US. SMA-UK was formed in October 2004 as a UK alternative to the US-based Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO).
The committee's vice president is Mike Grehan, CEO of Smart Interactive and members include Jim Banks of Web Diversity, Jason Cartright of GCDM, Simon Collingridge of Netsposure, Teddie Cowell of Neutralize, Shakil Khan of Active Med and Barry Lloyd of MakeMeTop.
