Yahoo! revamps free email service
29 June 2005
Yahoo! has announced this week that it plans to test a new version of its leading web-based email service in the next two months.
The overhaul will see Yahoo! add new technology acquired with its purchase last year of Oddpost to its email service.
Among the new features are drag-and-drop message organisation, a preview pane to view emails instantly, the ability to search email headers, body and attachments and the option of viewing multiple emails in different windows. The new email service will operate more like a desktop email program.
According to a Yahoo! spokeswoman, an upgraded version of Yahoo! email is being used internally and will be rolled out to a limited group of users within the next couple of months. The email service will be available to all Yahoo! email users once the company has finished its testing programme.
Ethan Diamond, product director for Yahoo email, said Yahoo! users would be able to decide on using the new version, sticking with the older version, or using both. The new service currently works with only Internet Explorer and Firefox, but support for other browsers is likely to be introduced.
Yahoo!'s free email service is in direct competition with AOL, MSN's Hotmail and Google's recently launched Gmail service. Earlier this month AOL launched a free web-based email service with two gigabytes of storage for AOL Instant Messenger users.
