Alexa.com searches the search engines

28 June 2005

Eight out of top ten most popular sites in the world are search engines, according to a new website that searches the search engines.

The new service, www.ekazaam.com, offers a fully browser based search bar with hundreds of major search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and Baidu organised into 13 categories. The small toolbar requires no software to download, so has no risk of spyware.

The categories available are: Web, Image, News, Audio, Video, Directory, Product, Game, Software, Job, Blog, Reference and Ebook. The relevant search engines will present themselves after a category is selected.

Most internet users now have a search engine as their default home page and employ several engines to find what they want.

However, ekazaam.com claims that it can be very time consuming to perform a keyword search with different search engines. The new service offers users the chance to repeat a search on the same keywords on hundreds of engines with just their mouse and there are over 20 country specific search available.

There are more than one hundred thousand search engines now in existence, indexing billions of webpages, and 99.9 per cent are free, according to Alexa.com. Without any paid advertisement, Ekazaam.com has managed to attract users from over 40 countries and achieved an Alexa weekly ranking of around 30,000 out of 50 million sites just one month after its launch.
