Altnet warns against P2P copyright infringement
12 November 2003
Altnet has spoken out in warning against companies that may be infringing upon patents regarding the online file sharing of media content.
The peer-to-peer (P2P) technology online media provider has contaced nine companies including BigChampagne, Ranger Online, MediaDefendwer, Overpeer and MediaSentry.
Companies using Altnet's TrueNames file-identifying technology to spoof, track or prohibit files on file sharing networks have been accused of infringement.
According to Altnet the technology was improperly used to identify people sharing files who were then sued for copyright infringement, thus leaving the original P2P service providers accountable.
Eric Garland, CEO of BigChampagne, asserted to ZDNet that the claims are 'absolutely false', claiming the company has never used the TrueNames software.
Derek Broes, an executive at Altnet, said in a statement: 'We continue to focus on protecting and commercialising our patented technology and realising the potential it offers content owners by commercialising peer-to-peer networks.
'Altnet acquired the TrueNames patents in order to build a commercial solution for P2P operators and content owners. The patent should not be used improperly for any reason,' he added.
