New technology to further protect online copyrights
11 November 2003
New technology regarding the streaming of music and film over the Internet is set to further protect the copyrights of those products, according to new research.
Streaming media refers to the transmission of digital audio and video files over an IP network, in real time or on-demand, while prohibiting users from storing the files locally and protecting content from being stolen.
The technology will allow music and video files to be delivered across IP networks, thus giving IP network operators the ability to compete with cable service providers for entertainment and advertising revenue, as well as fuelling demand for broadband access.
'We expect carriers to generate near-term revenue by delivering rich content over existing IP networks,' commented Insight Research president Robert Rosenberg, according to Telecom Paper.
'The total number of broadband users will more than double by 2008, representing a lucrative market for streaming applications,' he added.
As well as protecting film and music copyrights, streaming media promises to generate some $34 billion (£20 billion) in new revenue in the US market by 2008, according to Insight Research.
