Microsoft fails to renew hotmail domain
10 November 2003
Microsoft recently lost its claim to the 'hotmail.co.uk' domain after recently failing to renew the name.
As a result of the mistake the domain was returned to the open market, where it almost immediately bought by an anonymous party.
A spokesperson for Nominet, the registry for all '.uk ' domains, confirmed that hotmail.co.uk had failed to be renewed and was thus placed back into pool of available domains.
For Nominet's part, she confirmed that 'all the standard renewal procedures were followed regarding hotmail.co.uk,' according to the Register.
'I would like to remind companies and their agents that it is their responsibility to renew their domains,' she added.
The individual made efforts to contact Microsoft and return the domain to them, but was unsuccessful in doing so. Bosses at Microsoft were alerted to his actions by an online news journal.
The episode echoes a similar incident in 1999 when Microsoft neglected to renew its 'passport.com' domain, temporarily crippling its entire Hotmail service. The company is yet to comment on the recent incident.
