File-sharing threatened by anti-piracy technology
7 November 2003
Computer and television manufacturers in the US have been ordered to incorporate digital rights management (DRM) technology into their devices by mid 2005.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants the anti-piracy technology included as standard to protect the entertainment industry from the widespread illegal sharing of copyrighted material, which is causing difficulties in the music industry.
FCC chairman Michael Powell explained that the protection system was necessary to stop the swapping of free-to-air digital TV programmes and films over file-sharing networks.
DRM systems effectively provide a form of encryption, with users only able to view the programmes if they possess the necessary DRM readers.
The Australian free-to-air digital TV industry is likely to follow the lead of their US peers and force manufacturers to adopt the technology, Computing magazine reported.
