Microsoft declares anti-virus bounty
6 November 2003
Microsoft has created a $5 million (£2.9 million) reward fund to boost attempts at tracking down 'cyberspace saboteurs' who write damaging computer viruses.
The software giant has offered a $500,000 (£299,000) bounty for information leading to the arrest of the authors of the devastating MSBlast and Sobig computer viruses, two of the costliest computer bugs to hit the Internet.
The trail for the culprits has reportedly run cold and the cash is seen as a way of generating new information.
Both bugs infected hundreds of thousands of PCs and networks around the world, crashing systems and causing massive repair bills for companies.
Microsoft officials, accompanied by US and international law-enforcement groups, announced the rewards at a recent press conference.
A spokesman for Microsoft explained that. 'viruses are criminal attacks on everyone who uses the Internet'.
