ISPs call for broadband push
4 November 2003
The UK Internet Service Providers Association (Ispa) has called on the UK government to increase the speed of the rollout of broadband to homes and businesses.
Ispa said the government should force BT to set broadband trigger levels for all exchanges in order to make it clear how many people must register for each one to be upgraded to ADSL.
It has also requested that more be done to promote wireless and satellite broadband as well as high speed ADSL.
In evidence to the Trade and Industry Select Committee Inquiry into Broadband, Ispa also called for rules to reduce the cost of wholesale broadband.
'Ispa believes that regulation will almost certainly be required in a market where (BT) continues to hold significant market power,' stated Ispa chairman Matthew Hare, according to vnunet.
BT has announced that its ADSL lines are currently available to 90 per cent of the population and that it is looking for ways to satisfy the remaining 10 per cent.
