Microsoft search engine could instigate browser war
30 October 2003
Experts are warning that the launch of a new Microsoft search engine could provoke other search firms into launching competing web browsers, thus sparking a browser war.
Since the purchase of Overture by Yahoo earlier this year the market has been shaping up for a three-way struggle between Yahoo/Overture, Google and MSN.
Andrew Goodman, founder of search marketing Web site Traffick.com, explained the strngth of MSN in the search sector:
'MSN has advantages that other providers don't. It controls that browser, the operating system and office software. Search can be integrated to form a coherent package,' he told Zero.
'I foresee the launch of a Google browser within two years. Controlling the browser may be Google's only defence,' he added.
Though Microsoft has the resources and expertise necessary to compet convincingly in the search market, analysts assert that the lead held by Google and Yahoo will prevent domination.
