New virus attacks Windows
29 October 2003
Experts are warning that a new Windows worm may attack a large number of computers, already having begun spreading online since the weekend.
The virus, dubbed 'Sober' is causing concern because of the way it spreads; posing as an update from anti-virus firms and using different subject lines to conceal itself.
Because the worm travels with its own email engine, it can send itself to any address harvested from computers it has managed to infect.
So far Sober has been most prolific in Germany, but has begun to take hold in UK networks. Mail filtering firm Message Labs said it had stopped some 3,400 copies of Sober since the weekend, according to the BBC.
Hidden within the virus is text that praises the creator of Sobig, the virus that in August became the fastest spreading worm ever.
