Firefox fails one in ten websites
23 June 2005
One in ten UK websites do not reportedly work properly on the open source Firefox web browser, according to new research.
Web-testing firm SciVisum claims that a tenth of the 100 leading consumer sites assessed proved difficult for Firefox users to navigate.
The websites identified include the government website Jobcentreplus.gov.uk and the cinema site Odeon.co.uk.
Firefox is an open source alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser. Launched in November last year, it has swiftly gained a loyal user base and an eight per cent share of the browser market.
Of the websites that SciVisum tested, three per cent were found to be turning away non Internet Explorer (IE) users and seven per cent included non-standard code recognised only by IE.
"Surprisingly, after all these years, users of standard-compliant browsers are still faced with sites that do not support their browser or with a link suggesting they download Internet Explorer," said Deri Jones, chief executive of SciVisum.
