Google 'planning online payment service'
21 June 2005
Search giant Google is reportedly planning to take on the might of eBay's Pay Pal service.
Google's entry to the online payment marketplace is being viewed by many net watchers as a threat to PayPal's crown.
PayPal is currently one of the most popular methods of paying on the internet without using a credit card, as users can just transfer money using their email ID. eBay earns almost a quarter of its annual revenue from PayPal.
eBay is a big customer of Google's online advertisement system and Google could lose a substantial revenue stream by moving into the online payment market, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Google's search engine and its Froogle shopping service are significant sources of customers for internet stores and an online payment service could be a significant source of revenue for the search giant.
The newspaper cites sources familiar to Google, which it claims are quite trustworthy. However, Google has refused to comment on the reports.
