Google launches new search engine in Romansch
13 June 2005
Search giant Google has unveiled a new search engine in Romansch.
The Latin-derived language is spoken by just 35,000 people living in the mountains of southeastern Switzerland, according to Google, the internet's leading search engine provider.
The search engine now offers native Romansch speakers the ability to look for websites in their own language, although the results are not limited to the language.
The search engine interface is in Romansch and groups fighting to keep the language alive have welcomed the initiative.
The Swiss government has passed legislation to protect the minority language and its use is regulated in schools and on banknotes.
Romansch, a direct descendant of Latin, is one of Switzerland's four official languages.
