Google Sitemaps service will aid SEO
6 June 2005
Google has announced the launch of its Google Sitemaps program, which enables webmasters to automatically submit their webpages to the search engine.
The program, currently available in beta version, is an experiment in web crawling and is designed to help webmasters get information about their updates to Google whenever they change or increase the content on their site.
Each webmaster is required to create and post an XML file on the site's server describing which pages on the site should be indexed, including information on the last update and the frequency of the update. Webmasters are also required to tell how important each page is relative to others on the site.
The new service will help websites with search engine optimisation (SEO) on Google and is likely to open up new and improved marketing opportunities.
Shiva Shivakumar, engineering director at Google, wrote in a post on Google's blog: "We're undertaking an experiment called Google Sitemaps that will either fail miserably, or succeed beyond our wildest dreams, in making the web better for webmasters and users alike.
"Initially, we plan to use the URL information webmasters supply to further improve the coverage and freshness of our index. Over time that will lead to our doing an even better job of delivering more search results from more websites."
Google has created a tool called the Sitemap Generator to help webmasters create the required XML file for Google Sitemaps.
