New name for Ask Jeeves
26 May 2005
IAC has revealed that it is planning to axe either the "Jeeves" or the "Ask" from the search engine Ask Jeeves.
The company's chief executive Barry Diller told an audience of media and executives that Ask Jeeves is likely to receive a sizeable cash injection for marketing and development, but added that its brand name was unlikely to survive.
He added that a new name had not been decided. However, the search engine's website is now called www.ask.com, so analysts predict the Jeeves will go.
Marketwatch reports that Mr Diller said: " We're thinking about renaming it, It probably won't be called Ask Jeeves." IAC recently purchased Ask Jeeves in a $1.85 billion deal.
Meanwhile, Ask Jeeves is launching a new feature designed to provide speedier answers to search inquiries and the website will display a "Web Answer" to many of the requests that its search engine processes. For instance, if someone enters "world's largest lake" into Ask.com's search box, the top result will include a snippet listing the Caspian Sea, including its size and location
Ask Jeeves also is introducing a feature called Zoom, focused on determining the precise objective of a search requests.
