Podcast plans for new version of iTunes

25 May 2005

Apple Computer has announced that the next version of its iTunes music management program will enable users to find and subscribe to podcasts.

Podcasts are MP3 audio files online, downloadable homemade "radio shows" that can be created or listened to by anyone with the right equipment. The shows have boomed on the internet and iTunes, Apple's music-management program and integrated online music store, has now picked up the technology.

Podcasts are sent automatically to subscribers' digital music players whenever new files are posted online. Many podcast subscribers already use iTunes software, along with a third-party program, to find, download and transfer the shows to digital music players.

Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs said support for podcasts would be included in the next version of iTunes, due within the next 60 days. "Already millions of people are subscribing to these podcasts," he told an annual technology conference. "I think this is going to send it into orbit."

Mr Jobs noted in his presentation that there are about 8,000 free podcasts available on the internet and Apple plans to create a way for podcasters to submit their work to the iTunes Music Store.

"We can highlight the 20 most popular podcasts and we can highlight the ones that are really great," he explained. "The community out there is phenomenal." Recent studies indicate that millions of people are now listening to podcasts.
