Yahoo! adds VoIP to Messenger service
24 May 2005
Yahoo! has launched a new version of its popular Messenger instant message service that includes voice mail, a call-history archive and free ring tones.
The new Messenger enables users to make free PC-to-PC voice calls over the internet using Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.
Yahoo!, MSN and America Online have all souped up their instant messenger services in recent weeks, as competition for web users' loyalty becomes more fierce. Both MSN and AOL, through its AIM service, already provide PC-to-PC calls.
Start-up Skype Technologies, which specialises in internet telephony also offers IM-style chat and file sharing services.
Yahoo! has also stated that it plans to tighten spam protection and add photo and file sharing to Messenger.
In the United States, AOL has 22 million AIM users for its free service, on top of 23.2 million AOL subscribers with AIM, according to comScore Media Metrix. Yahoo! has 18.7 million IM users and MSN 13.7 million.
