BitTorrent creator develops new search engine
24 May 2005
The creator of the popular online file-sharing program BitTorrent has announced plans for a new web-based search engine devoted to peer-2-peer file sharing.
The ad-supported service will search the internet for sites hosting files for downloading movies, music and other data and has been designed to function like Google, Yahoo! and other search sites.
Bran Cohen announced that the search site could be up and running this week.
BitTorrent, developed by Mr Cohen in 2001, looks for torrent files, digital markers that it needs to assemble complete files from multiple bits of data. The process requires finding host sites and, as a result, some operators of websites hosting tracker files have been forced to shut down, though Mr Cohen himself has not been targeted.
"The goal is to get every single torrent on the internet indexed," Cohen said.
A link to the search engine will be posted on BitTorrent.com and the new search engine has indexed or found around 60,000 torrent files to date, Mr Cohen said.
The BitTorrent search engine is planning to link to any Torrent file, regardless of whether it is illegal or not, according to WebProNews.
