Google provides users with personalised pages
23 May 2005
Search giant Google has launched its own personalised web service.
Google users can now receive their favourite sites and information sources in a single space.
The announcement by Google comes as the battle between the major search engines, such as Yahoo!, MSN, Google, AOL and Ask Jeeves, heats up.
Yahoo! and Microsoft have already launched personalised search sites, offering news, weather, stocks, email and blogs on a single page.
The new Google beta personalised homepage service is now listed on Google Labs and gives users instant access to Google News, GMail, Google Stock Quotes, Google Movies, Weather and Driving Directions.
Most of Google's revenue comes from search advertising and the new page aims to keep people using its search engine, though Google has stressed that it is not turning itself into a portal. "It's not a portal," insisted Google chief executive Eric Schmidt. "It's a personalisation tool."
Google is not placing targeted adverts on personalised homepages for the time being, but has not ruled out the possibility in the future.
Google plans to offer a broad range of content for its personalised service including BBC News, The New York Times, technology website Slashdot and its own Quote of the Day and Word of the Day slots, under a new project dubbed Fusion. The search firm also forecasts a complete RSS (Really Simple Syndication) rollout in the next couple of months.
