MSN plans expansion of RSS services

23 May 2005

The director of MSN has announced that the company plans to make RSS (Really Simple Syndication) friendly to the everyday web user , in a move that will also benefit companies and search engine optimisation (SEO) firms.

Phil Holden told delegates at a syndicate conference in New York that new services would build syndication feeds into the messaging alerts, a Windows screen saver and web search and demonstrated upcoming services. He added that MSN would integrate the technology into more of its online services by the end of the year.

Delivering a keynote speech, the web boss said: " Our goal is in making consumer adoption and consumption of RSS easier. We will literally put RSS and syndication in many, many places."

The MSN executive said the recent acquisition of MessageCast would help the process as MessageCast's technology will handle retrieving the feeds and making them compatible with MSN Alerts.

MSN has begun taking steps into RSS in recent months, joining rival Yahoo! in the integration of syndication technology into online services.

MY MSN began aggregating feeds on personalised homepages in January and started testing a web-based RSS aggregator in March.

A few weeks ago, MSN unveiled an RSS feature of its web search engine that can turn a search into a feed subscription and tracks and reads from news readers and online aggregators. Search engines for blogs and RSS, such as Feedster , Technorati and Blogdigger, also let users create RSS subscription out of searches.
