Google helps users find a taxi
19 May 2005
Google has unveiled a new service for its Google Local search engine.
Ride Finder shows users a map with the actual positions of taxis moving down the street in real time.
The service gives customers the name and numbers of the cab companies and the number of cabs currently available.
Google Ride Finder breaks down results into companies and also applies to shuttles and limos. The programme is currently in beta testing and will soon be available for wireless devices.
However, according to Pay Per Click Analyst, the service only offers taxi information on 12 cities in the US. Furthermore, in New York City, only one company, a shuttle firm, has signed up to the scheme so far.
Google hopes to sign up more companies in more cities before it launches Google Ride Finder officially.
The search giant points out that the service will help in areas where there are fewer cabs available, for those who are very busy and in very hot, cold or rainy weather, when standing outside for a taxi is an unappealing prospect.
