Microsoft unveils toolbar with desktop search
16 May 2005
Software giant Microsoft has released its final version of a new desktop search tool.
The MSN Search Toolbar was launched on a trial basis five months ago and enables users to search for email, documents and other data stored on hard drives more quickly and efficiently than the Windows 'Find' function.
The new toolbar includes a range of new features based on extensive user feedback during the software's beta testing stage.
The company is taking on search engine Google and other rivals in the increasingly lucrative search market. Google was the first large firm to unveil a desktop search tool and Yahoo! launched its own version in January.
Apples latest Mac operating system, Tiger, also includes a rapid desktop search tool called 'Spotlight'.
Christopher Payne, vice president of MSN Search, said the new desktop search tool was a "time-saver" and pointed out that it can be accessed, once downloaded, from Internet Explorer, Outlook or from the Windows desktop.
By using add-ins, users can also search more than 200 different file types, including Excel, PowerPoint, MP3, GIF and JPG files. PDF documents can be searched by the tool by downloading software components from Adobe Systems.
MSN, Google and Yahoo desktop toolbars are all available as free downloads.
