Google buys Dodgeball
13 May 2005
Search giant Google has purchased Dodgeball.com, a social networking site for mobile phones.
Created by Dennis Crowley and Alex Rainert, graduates of New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program, New York-based Dodgeball enables users to find and talk to each other through mobile text messaging.
The service targets young adults looking for an easy way to arrange social meetings.
The Dodgeball founders said in a statement to users: "We talked to a lot of different angel investors and venture capitalists, but no one really "got" what we were doing - that is until we met Google. They looked at us in a 'You're two guys doing some pretty cool stuff, why not let us help you out and let's see what you can do with it' type of way."
The new Google partners added: "We've adopted Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service as our own. You should have received a notice about these new terms. If you disagree with the terms or decide that you don't want to be a part of the new post-Google dodgeball, please delete your account."
Google purchased Dodgeball on May 11th for an undisclosed amount. "We're not disclosing terms or anything like that, and don't have any announced plans for it (Dodgeball.com)," a company spokesman told reporters.
