Google designer discusses logos
10 May 2005
The designer behind Google's quirky logo, Hwang Jeong-mok, has given an interview.
The world's largest search engine is known for adorning its logo on noteworthy dates.
For Leonardo da Vinci's birthday on April 15th this year, the Google logo featured sketches of the painter's famous works, such as the Mona Lisa.
Hwang Jeong-mok, a 27-year-old Korean-American known as Dennis at Google, creates the designs at the company's Mountain View, California, headquarters, JoongAng Daily reports. He studied art and computers at Stanford and entered Google as an intern, working up to his current post as international Webmaster, with the logo designing a side job to his main responsibilities.
Dennis has been creating Google's logos since 2000 and celebrated his roots on August 15th 2001 by drawing the Korean flag and national flower into Google's logo on Korea's Independence Day.
Google workers are allowed to spend 20 per cent of their work time in other things they want to do. I take that time to draw," he said in an interview. "Sometimes I receive thousands of emails from people who comment on the logo design."
