Microsoft licenses spare technology
6 May 2005
Software giant Microsoft has announced that it is licensing some of its spare technology to small firms and entrepreneurs.
The Redmond-based company claims that it has developed far more technology in its years of research and development than it might reasonably bring to the market.
Microsoft launched Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP) Ventures on Wednesday and the new program is aimed at moving new innovations in technology to the marketplace.
In exchange for part ownership of the company, royalties, or both, Microsoft will provide a business with a piece of technology, so that a smaller firm can focus on a single product and bring it to the market in less time than it would take a larger company.
The list of available licenses includes technology for facial detection and tracking, making counterfeit-resistant labels, and mobile video communication and the complete list can now be viewed online.
"Obviously if we can accelerate the speed at which cool technologies reach the market, even if they're not in a Microsoft product, we count that as a success," said David Kaefer, director of business development for Microsoft's intellectual property and licensing group.
