BBC clears up at online awards

The UK's BBC has won four Webbys this year including both the Webby award and the People's Choice in the Best News category for BBC News Interactive.
The winners of The 9th Annual Webby Awards will receive their gongs at the internet honours' ceremony in New York City on June 6th. This year's annual online 'Oscars' received a record number of entries from over 40 countries and more than 200,000 votes were cast by the people around the world for the People's Voice Awards.
The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences announced the winners in over 60 categories, including Community, Fashion, Film, and Politics. New categories making their debut this year include Blog, Beauty, Real Estate, Retail, and Social Networking. The 9th Annual Webby Awards.
"The winners of The 9th Annual Webby Awards reveal how the web has become the driving force shaping popular culture, the marketplace, and society as a whole," said Tiffany Shlain, the founder and chairperson of The Webby Awards.
The Webby Awards will present former Vice President Al Gore with The Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the role he has played in the development of the internet over the past three decades and other Webby Special Achievement recipients include: Craig Newmark, the founder of craigslist, for Webby Person of the Year; British band The Kleptones for Webby Artist of the Year, in recognition of their pioneering new musical genres and methods of online distribution; and Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield, the founders of Flickr, for taking photo sharing and management to an exciting new level, for Webby Breakout of the Year.
The Webby Awards are the leading international honours for websites and the people behind them. The 2005 ceremony will showcase winners delivering the Webbys' trademark five-word acceptance speeches, and presenters such as celebrated digital filmmakers the Spiridellis Brothers, the founders of Jib Jab.
Webby Awards winners range from powerhouses like Mercedes-Benz USA (Automotive), Google (Best Practices) and Skype (Telecommunications), to smaller sites such as Graffiti Archaeology (Arts), Dogster (Community), and 43 Things (Social Networking).
People's Voice awards went to an array of web companies this year, including ING Direct (Banking/Bill Paying), Yahoo! Hotjobs (Employment), ESPN (Sports), BookCrossing.com (Community), Eddie Izzard (Humor) and 101 Cookbooks (Personal Site).
The Webbys were founded in 1996 to honour the best in web design and function.
