Apple has launched the fourth upgrade to its OS X operating software.
Fans queued up at stores around the world for the launch, which occurred among celebrations and fanfare.OS X, launched in 2001, is the base operating system from Mac machines.
Tiger has around 200 new features, such as a desktop search system called Spotlight and a set of reference tools called Dashboard, which includes a dictionary, stock information, weather reports, phone book, translator and flight checker. Mac users will also be able to create their own widgets.
The update also includes the iChat system that lets people set up video conferencing with up to three others and parental controls system-wide, which allow adults to limit what programs a child can launch and ban them from burning CDs and DVDs, changing system preferences or even printing.
Spotlight is the first integrated search system offered as part of a mainstream consumer PC operating system and can search email, office documents, photos, songs, address books, calendars, and a range of other files to match a search term. A Smart Folders programme can also automatically grab files that meet your criteria.
The server version of Tiger also features basic blogging tools built that can be used by companies to allow employees to write their own web journals.
Microsoft is due to release the next version of its Windows operating system, known as Longhorn in late 2006.
