Google plans news search revamp
3 May 2005
Google has filed a patent in the US that will allow the search giant to rank stories by their quality, as well as by relevance.
The patent will create a new system that will compare the track record and credibility of different news sources, as the company continues to look for new ways to improve the search experience.
Google News currently provides search results based on relevance to the keyword entered. The new system would compare a series of variables, including length of story, how recent the item is, creditability, number of staff employed and website traffic, New Scientist reports.
The new system could create some controversy around how it assesses credibility of news sources.
The big search companies, Ask Jeeves, MSN, Yahoo! and Google, are becoming increasingly competitive and the search market is rapidly changing and adapting to web users needs.
"Google is constantly thriving for better relevance in its searching and anything that improves the user experience is a good thing," said Julian Smith, an analyst with Jupiter Research.
