Yahoo! personal search engine offers targeted advertising

Yahoo! has launched a beta version of its personal search engine.

The new service offers new opportunities for advertisers via Better Web search results.

The My Web service will enable registered users to create their own search archive by saving their favourite webpages, search results and search history and promises more targeted advertising and bigger revenues for search providers.

The new enhanced search service is Yahoo!'s latest weapon against search companies Google, MSN and Ask Jeeves and My Web replaces Yahoo! Search, in beta testing since October.

My Web users can also share online information with others by email, RSS, blogs or IM. The service archives information, which users can then share over email, instant messenger, and on the Yahoo! 360 service. Users can also add notes to saved pages to add knowledge to search results (e.g. "This restaurant has the best martinis").

Salim Mitha, director of Yahoo Search, UK and Ireland, said: "Other competitors just capture the URL which is useless for dynamic content. For a news story, say on BBC, the Google application it doesn't give you the exact copy of what you saw, but My Web does."

He added: "We want to give the user more control over the information that they've seen or are looking for. We strongly support the open standard of RSS and aggregation of content."

Google debuted the test version of its personalised search service, My Search History, earlier this month.
