Gates unveils Longhorn features
26 April 2005
Microsoft boss Bill Gates has unveiled details of his new Windows operating system, code-named Longhorn.
Mr Gates demonstrated key features of the new OS at a developers' conference in Seattle.
The new version of Windows is reported to be the biggest update since Windows 95 was launched ten years ago. Longhorn is scheduled to launch in December 2006, five years after Windows XP was released in 2001, although Mr Gates said a preliminary, or beta, version would be available this summer.
Mr Gates, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect, told delegates at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference that the new version would offer beefed-up security, richer graphics, better organisation and search of information stored on PCs and much faster performance.
"Our key goal in terms of Longhorn is that it be the highest-quality release we've ever done," Mr Gates said. "At every stage of the way we're going to listen to feedback, so it's possible some of these milestones will change and we'll choose to put more time into things."
In the new Windows OS, semi-transparent windows will allow users to see objects underneath, including moving video, while search results will be displayed in real time as queries are typed in.
