Wales top and bottom of UK broadband list

26 April 2005

Welsh constituencies rank top and bottom of a list of broadband take-up in the UK.

Almost 40 per cent of homes in Cardiff Central have high-speed internet access, compared to just over two per cent of homes in Meirionnydd Nant Conwy.

The survey by net specialist Point Topic reveals that broadband take-up rates currently highlight the differences between rich and poor areas of Britain.

The poll also discovered that Labour controlled constituencies tended to be more switched on than Tory areas. Seven out of 10 of the most connected constituencies are Labour ahead of the forthcoming general election on May 5th.

According to Point Topic, areas that are most broadband connected are those with young and affluent voters and regions where BT has competition with cable companies for market share.

Point Topic notes that rural constituencies are not catered for by the cable companies and are often too far from telephone exchanges to make broadband provision viable.Of the 10 least well-connected areas, seven are located in rural Wales and are experiencing connectivity rates below 10 per cent.

Tim Johnson, founder of Point Topic, said: "We came out of this realising that (the digital divide) is not about the geographical divide, which is a solvable problem, its the social divide that's important. There are more than 40 per cent of homes without the internet."
