Over 400 college students sued over internet piracy
15 April 2005
US record companies and movie studios are suing over hundreds of students for piracy, claiming that they have illegally shared songs and films over the internet.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed a case against 405 students it alleges have shared files on the high-speed Internet2 network.
The film industry's trade body, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) declined to say how many students it is suing. A film can be downloaded in 30 seconds on Internet2, compared with six hours over a high-speed phone line.
Internet2 is a non-profit group led by over 200 US universities and a number of corporate partners from the networking and technology business, including AT&T, Intel, Sun Microsystems, and Cisco.
RIAA president Cary Sherman said: "Internet2 is increasingly becoming the network of choice for students looking to steal songs and other copyrighted works on a massive scale."
Internet2 was designed as an academic network for use in fields such as medicine and weather forecasting and a spokesperson for the site told the Los Angeles Times that copyright infringement was expressly forbidden under its rules.
The RIAA has sued more than 9,000 people for distributing songs using peer-to-peer software in the past two years.
