Public call for digital UK suggestions

8 April 2005

An online consultation asking the British public to submit ideas on how digital technologies can improve life in the UK has been unveiled.

The weblog will launch in July and the responses will form part of the Institute of Public Policy Research's (IPPR) Manifesto for a Digital Britain, a year-long series of events and online publications, that will conclude with the launch of a new digital policy programme for the UK in July.

Web users can post comments and the blog will pose several key policy questions over the next month.

The consultation is aimed at experts and public alike and the best ideas from the online consultation will be inserted into the final publication.

William Davies, Senior Research Fellow in Digital Society at the IPPR said: "We hear too much from the futurists and technology experts. Successful technology strategies depend on listening to the public and those who have to use new tools on a day-to-day basis.

"Both the public and policy-makers lack confidence in the ability of Information Technology to improve economic competitiveness and quality of life in the UK. Now is the time to invite views on where things are currently going wrong, and what sorts of policy interventions might support a more effective modernisation programme."

The consultation will take place on the project's weblog at www.digitalmanifesto.org and the questions come under three themes of 'Innovating', 'Reassuring', and 'Empowering'.

Last week, the government unveiled a separate seven-point plan to get more people on the net and close the "digital divide".
