BT connects five million to broadband
5 April 2005
BT is expected to connect its five millionth broadband customer this week.
The telecoms giant announced that the milestone came a year ahead of its own predictions, after lower prices and higher speeds created strong competition among broadband suppliers.
Prime minister Tony Blair welcomed the news, claiming it was of "vital importance" to the country. He added: "It is great news for the whole communications industry that BT has been able to make this announcement a year ahead of target."
The BT total includes broadband connections sold on by third party firms and suggests that soon more than half of all net users in the UK will be on a broadband connection.
Broadband now has a higher take up rate than televisions, CD players or mobile phones and more than 95 per cent of homes and businesses in the UK are now connected to broadband-enabled exchanges, with the figure expected to rise to 99.6 per cent by the summer.
Ben Verwaayen, chief executive of BT said: "Three years ago when we set a target of five million by 2006 it seemed a daunting task. To have reached this milestone so early into 2005 is a massive achievement for the whole industry. The momentum of broadband is continuing to build."
